Last summer, I went to a BlogHer Conference in San Francisco with some of my best blogging buddies—Anna, Corinne, Emily and Meg. I had no expectations for the all Saturday event, but the workshops, food and goodies far exceeded my expectations.
More than anything, I became even more aware of the ways social media is quickly evolving and affecting the ways we as humans communicate. Blogging, and micro blogging sites such as Twitter, are being used in every sector: from nonprofits to small businesses to large corporations, to average people like you and me.
I bought a book at the conference that I quickly gobbled up, and shared about on this blog. Soon after I began blogging and tweeting for work (much to my own dismay, considering I’d sworn to never ever adopt the annoying tool that seemed to dominate so many discussions at the conference.)
Since last summer, I’ve kept a very close eye on social media trends, emerging technologies, and the explosive Facebook and Twitter growth statistics. I tried to give up Facebook for Lent, but found myself on the site many days because of client questions or requests related to creating Fan pages. Just yesterday I spent hours at a coffee shop trying to catch up on all the latest articles, blog postings and case studies around social media. I’d guess that I spend about 15-25 hours per week reading blogs, tweeting, or catching up on research.
In the midst of all this, I began thinking about my own blog and how I might want to use this space in the future. Many of you know that I’d love to do freelance work someday—whether that’s writing for magazines, authoring a book, or, as of recently, acting as a social media consultant. Perhaps I’ll do a combination of the three.
I decided that Blogger wasn’t serving the functions I needed. I wanted a new, updated theme. I wanted my own web address. I wanted change. (Remember that “stuck” post? If you can’t get a dog, or you aren’t ready to buy a house, simply change your blog address. Right? )
